Mike Anderson, Missouri Close On 2-Year Extension

Mar 21, 2011 10:23 PM

Mike Anderson and the University of Missouri are close to completing a two-year extension that would keep the coach from further entertaining overtures from Arkansas.

The deal would add two years to the five remaining on Anderson's current contract.

A source said the two sides have been working out the terms of an extension for weeks and that a proposal is awaiting approval from the UM Board of Curators, who would discuss it during their scheduled meeting in Rolla, which began Monday morning and will conclude Tuesday.

Missouri has compiled a record of 111-57 since Anderson, who spent 17 years in Fayetteville, Ark., as an assistant coach took over the program in 2006 and has reached the past three NCAA Tournaments.

Tubby Smith Shoots Down Report About Arkansas

Mar 15, 2011 10:16 AM

Minnesota coach Tubby Smith reiterated that he expects to be back at Minnesota next season.

A Fort Worth Star-Telegram report said Smith was close to replacing John Pelphrey at Arkansas.

During his weekly radio show on WCCO Monday night, Smith said he plans to coach the Gophers next season.

"Yes, I do," he responded when asked if he expected to return in 2011-12. He also said that's "it's just a matter of time" before he signs an extension, which he has discussed with the school for more than a year.

Arkansas Fires John Pelphrey

Mar 13, 2011 8:20 PM

Arkansas fired John Pelphrey on Sunday after four season with the school.

He had a career mark of 69-59 and was 18-13 this season.

Pelphrey replaced Stan Heath as coach of the Razorbacks in 2007-08 and finished 23-12.

"After a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our men's basketball program, including an assessment of the overall student-athlete experience within our program, it is clear that we have not made the progress over the last four years that is necessary to return Razorback basketball to a place of national relevance," athletic director Jeff Long said.
